Why Moissanite is the Perfect Choice for Your Engagement Ring

What is Moissanite? And lets talk about Why Moissanite is the Perfect Choice for Your Engagement Ring
ENGAGEMENT RINGS SOUTH AFRICA
Moissanite is a lab-created gemstone composed of silicon carbide, renowned for its incredible sparkle and durability.
With exceptional fire (rainbow-like reflections) and brilliance, moissanite is one of the most radiant gemstones available. It ranks 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it highly scratch-resistant and perfect for everyday wear.
Due to its extreme rarity in nature, nearly all moissanite sold today is lab-grown.
At Moissanite By Design, we source our moissanite from one of the world’s leading providers of high-quality gemstones.

A Gemstone with an Out-of-This-World History
Moissanite’s discovery dates back to 1893 when Nobel Prize-winning chemist Henri Moissan found tiny, shimmering crystals in a meteor crater.
Initially mistaken for diamonds, these crystals turned out to be an entirely new gemstone sent from the stars.
Recognizing its rarity, Moissan successfully recreated moissanite in a laboratory by combining pure silica with carbon—elements commonly found in space but rare on Earth.
Thanks to modern advancements, moissanite can now be grown in labs, offering an ethical and affordable alternative to traditional diamonds while maintaining breathtaking beauty.
Although scientists first synthesized moissanite decades ago, it wasn’t until the 1990s that jewelers began selling moissanite engagement rings.
Initially marketed as a diamond alternative, moissanite has since earned recognition for its unique brilliance and fire, making it a gemstone loved in its own right.
Moissanite is an Affordable Luxury
Choosing moissanite means getting the ring of your dreams without the hefty price tag.
Because moissanite is lab-grown, its cost increases at a reasonable rate as the size increases—unlike diamonds, which see significant price jumps for larger stones.
For example, a 6x8mm (1.5-carat) round-cut moissanite (DEF, VVS1-2) costs around R5,700, whereas a diamond of the same size, clarity, and color can cost upwards of R80,000.
By opting for moissanite, couples can afford a larger center stone, customize their ring with additional gemstones, or invest in a sentimental, one-of-a-kind design—all without exceeding their budget.
Unmatched Durability & Scratch Resistance
Durability is a crucial factor when selecting an engagement ring. Moissanite ranks 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, just below diamonds (which rank at 10), making it one of the hardest substances on Earth.
Moissanite is more durable than rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, ensuring it withstands daily wear with minimal risk of damage. This gemstone retains its brilliance and sparkle over time, making it a perfect choice for a lifelong piece of jewelry.
At Moissanite By Design, we’re so confident in the quality of our moissanite that we offer a lifetime warranty, protecting your stone against any changes in brilliance, color, or clarity.
The Major Moissanite Sparkle Factor
If you love sparkle, moissanite delivers! The Intense Sparkle is Probably the Number 1 Reason Our Customers Agree Why Moissanite is the Perfect Choice for Your Engagement Ring
Thanks to its unique faceting pattern, moissanite has a refractive index of 2.65 to 2.69—making it the most brilliant gemstone in the world.
When light hits a moissanite ring, it produces even more vibrant flashes of color than a diamond.
The larger the moissanite stone, the more intense its fiery brilliance, ensuring an eye-catching, radiant look.
Even when moissanite needs a cleaning, it retains much of its sparkle—ideal for those with busy lifestyles who can’t regularly visit a jeweler for maintenance.
