Where it genuinely exceeds diamond is in refractive index: moissanite produces more fire and more coloured sparkle than a diamond of equivalent size. What metal should a bespoke engagement ring be made in?
For daily lifetime wear, 18ct gold or 950 platinum. 18ct yellow, white or rose gold (75% pure) strikes the best balance between durability, colour richness, and cost. From first consultation to delivery, most bespoke engagement rings take 4 to 6 weeks. The CAD design phase typically takes 5–7 working days; production after approval takes a further 2–3 weeks. If you have a proposal deadline, tell us early. We accommodate tight timelines where possible. Rush production is available in some cases — always ask.
What is the difference between bespoke and custom?
"Custom" often means choosing from a menu of predetermined options — a catalogue setting with your choice of stone colour. "Bespoke" means the design starts from a blank page. A bespoke engagement ring is conceived entirely around your brief, with no predetermined template. The setting style, the stone proportions, the band profile, the finish — all of it is originated for you, not selected from a range. At Moissanite by Design, both approaches are available. The bespoke route is recommended for clients who have a specific vision or whose partner has distinctive taste that no existing design quite captures.
What does a bespoke ring cost in South Africa?

Do I see the design before production begins?
Yes, always. We produce a full 3D CAD render and send it to you for approval before a single gram of metal is used. You can request changes at this stage. Nothing goes into production until you are completely satisfied with every detail.
Do you deliver bespoke rings anywhere in South Africa?
Yes. We deliver securely to all provinces — Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, East London and everywhere in between. International delivery is available on request.
Is moissanite a good stone for an engagement ring?
Yes. Moissanite scores 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale — well above what is required for daily wear over a lifetime. It produces more fire (spectral sparkle) than diamond, comes with GRA certification, and costs significantly less — meaning your budget stretches to a larger, more impressive stone or a more intricate setting.
Can you resize a bespoke ring after delivery?
Yes. One complimentary ring sizing is included within 6 months of delivery. Some setting styles have limits on how many sizes can be adjusted — we advise on this when confirming production.
What if I have no design in mind at all?
That is exactly where most of our clients start. You do not need to arrive with a design. Tell us about her — her style, what she wears, what she loves. That is enough. We guide the design process from there and present options based on who she is.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Absolutely. Lab-grown diamonds are molecularly identical to mined diamonds — same chemical composition, same hardness, same optical properties. The only difference is origin. They cost 50–70% less than equivalent mined stones, which means your budget buys a significantly larger, better-graded diamond. All our lab diamond bespoke rings come with IGI certification.
What is the difference between moissanite and a lab-grown diamond?
Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to mined diamonds — just created in a controlled environment rather than underground. Moissanite is a different gemstone, silicon carbide by composition. It has a higher refractive index than diamond, which produces more colourful fire and sparkle. Moissanite costs less than lab diamond, which means your money goes further on size and setting. Both are excellent for engagement rings and will withstand a lifetime of daily wear.
What metals do you use for bespoke engagement rings?
All bespoke engagement rings are available in 9ct, 14ct, and 18ct white, yellow, and rose gold, as well as 950 platinum. 18ct gold is the most popular choice — it balances durability, purity, and colour. White gold is rhodium plated and will need replating every few years. Platinum is naturally white, harder to scratch, and the best option for those with sensitive skin. 9ct gold is more durable by alloy content and is the entry-level price point.
Are all your diamonds and stones certified?
Yes. All bespoke engagement ring centre stones come with independent certification. Moissanite is GRA certified. Lab-grown diamonds are IGI certified. Natural diamonds carry GIA or IGI certification. Certification is included in the all-in price — there is no additional charge for the paperwork.
Is all your gold solid gold?
Yes. Every gold ring we produce is made in solid 9ct, 14ct, or 18ct gold — not plated, not filled. Plated jewellery wears through over time. Our rings are made to last a lifetime, so we only use solid precious metal.
Do you have a physical store?
No. Moissanite by Design is online only, based in Cape Town. We operate this way intentionally — without a showroom or sales staff, none of those costs are built into our prices. Everything goes toward stones, settings, and craftsmanship. If you want to speak to someone before committing to anything, we are available via WhatsApp or email and genuinely enjoy a good conversation.
What payment options do you accept?
We accept Yoco (credit card), PayFast (instant EFT or credit card), PayJustNow (3 equal interest-free instalments), HappyPay, Float, Payflex, Mobicred, and direct bank transfer (EFT). Instalments are available on most orders — ask us which option works best for your budget when you enquire.
Can I personalise an existing ring design instead of going fully bespoke?
Yes. If you find a design in our collection you love, we can personalise it — change the metal colour, adjust the stone shape, add an inscription, modify the band profile, or add pavé accents.
