Wedding ring metals for men

The metal decides almost everything about a mens wedding ring: what it costs, how heavy it feels, whether it scratches, and whether it can ever be resized. Style is the easy part and most men settle it in ten minutes. The metal is the decision worth spending time on.

Titanium rings for men

Titanium is about as strong as steel at roughly half the weight. It does not corrode and it does not react with skin, which is why it is used in surgical implants as well as jewellery. It is the metal most men here end up choosing.

A titanium ring for men deserves better than being treated as the budget option. The plain 6mm band at R700 is solid titanium, not plated over something cheaper, and it will outlast a gold ring at the same price several times over.

What titanium rings for men cost

Everything above R700 buys finish and detail rather than better metal. At R795 sit the rope band, the milgrain edged band and the double rope at 8mm. At R895 the choice widens to brushed, polished, diagonal grooves, triple grooves and a square sided band.

Black titanium

Black on titanium is a surface treatment. The brushed black band, the bevel edge and the matt inlay at 8mm all sit at R995. It wears slowly at the edges over years, and we recoat when it does. The metal underneath is unaffected.

Where titanium wins: light enough that a man who has never worn a ring adjusts within weeks, tough enough for trades and farming, and cheap enough that the budget goes into her ring instead. Tungsten rings for men

Tungsten is heavier than gold and harder than almost anything it will meet. If you want a ring you can wear through a trade and have it look new in ten years, tungsten rings for men are the answer. Nothing else here comes close on scratch resistance.

It also holds black better than any other metal we sell, which is why most of our tungsten is black. Mens tungsten rings here sit at R1,995 across the range, with a narrower 4mm black flat band from R1,595.

Black and two-tone tungsten wedding bands

The plain black polished band is the starting point, and it is the plain tungsten ring most men picture. For colour against the black, the black and blue brushed and the black and blue grooved.

Wood, antler and ceramic

The whiskey barrel wood and antler inlay sets reclaimed barrel wood and antler into the band, so no two are identical in grain. The black ceramic band is worth singling out separately, because the colour is ceramic rather than plating and cannot wear off the way a plated finish eventually does.

Tungsten mens wedding bands are the choice for men who cannot tolerate a marked ring, and the weight is the other half of the appeal. Where tungsten wins: nothing scratches it, and the weight reads as substantial in a way lighter metals do not. Where it loses: it is brittle rather than soft, so a hard enough blow on a hard edge can crack it where titanium would dent, and like titanium it cannot be resized. 9ct gold

The traditional answer, and the only metal on this page we can resize. That matters more than men expect, because fingers change with weight, heat and age across the decades a wedding ring is worn.

Gold starts at R3,195 for a 2mm comfort fit band and runs through supreme fit at 5mm from R14,600 to the Cuban band at R25,990 and the leaf design at R26,990.

Where gold wins: it holds value, it can be repaired and resized indefinitely, and it is the only one of these you can hand to a son. Where it loses: it scratches from the first week. Platinum

Naturally white, so it never needs the rhodium replating that white gold does. Dense, heavy, and the most understated of the precious metals.

Platinum marks like any metal, but it behaves differently: rather than losing material, it displaces it, so a scratched platinum ring keeps almost all its weight over decades. That is why it costs what it costs, and why it suits a man who wants one ring for life rather than a ring that gets replaced.

Mens rings with stones divide people, and the ones that work share one quality. The stones sit flush with the surface rather than standing proud of it. A raised stone on a man’s hand catches on everything and works loose within a year.

Which metal for which man

Weight, and how each metal feels

Weight is the thing men notice first and nobody mentions in a product description. Two rings of identical size in different metals feel like different objects.

If you are unsure, err light. A ring that feels heavy in the shop feels heavier by the end of a working day, and the ones that come off and stay off are almost always the heavy ones.

Caring for each metal

Titanium and tungsten. Warm soapy water and a soft brush. Nothing else needed, and neither tarnishes. A plain tungsten ring will look identical after a decade of this.

Gold. Same wash, plus a polishing cloth when it dulls. Take it off before chlorinated pools, because chlorine attacks the alloy metals and weakens thin sections over months. Sea water does no harm.

Platinum. Wash the same way. The surface develops a patina over years that many owners prefer, and we repolish it back to bright if you do not.

Black finishes. Plated black wears slowly at the edges over years and we recoat it. Ceramic black does not, since the colour is the material itself.

Bring any ring back at twelve months and we will check the band for thinning and check stone settings. It catches the one failure that actually matters, a band worn thin on one side.

Skin reactions and alloys

Titanium is the least reactive metal in this group, which is why it is used in surgical implants, and it is the safest choice if jewellery has bothered you before. Tungsten is generally well tolerated too.

With gold, the reaction is almost never to the gold. It is to the alloy metals blended with it for strength, and 9ct contains more alloy than 18ct by definition. Platinum is close to inert and rarely causes any issue at all.

How each metal ages over twenty years

A wedding ring is worn longer than almost anything else you own. Twenty years in, the metals have diverged so far they barely look like the same category of object.

The line that matters is the gold one. A gold band worn daily for twenty years will be measurably thinner where it sits against the palm, because gold is soft enough that each knock removes a trace of metal. That is not a fault and it is repairable: we can add metal back and rebuild the band, which is something no other metal here allows.

Tungsten and titanium do not thin, but they cannot be repaired either. When one fails, and both eventually can, it is replaced rather than mended. That is the real trade behind the price difference, and it is worth understanding before you decide that the cheaper ring is automatically the better buy.

What each metal is worth later

Nobody buys a wedding ring as an investment, but the difference is worth knowing.

Gold and platinum have a floor under them. Even at scrap, a solid 9ct band is worth something, and that figure rises with the gold price. It is a fraction of what you paid, since the making and the margin do not come back, but it never reaches zero.

Titanium and tungsten have effectively no resale value. The metals are inexpensive and there is no scrap market for them in jewellery. That does not make them a bad buy, and for most men it is irrelevant. It matters only if you are weighing a ring as something that holds value.

Engraving, by metal

Most men engrave the inside of the band, and the metal decides what is possible.

Gold and platinum take engraving easily, in any style, and it can be added later or changed if the ring is ever reworked. Hand engraving is possible on both.

Titanium engraves by laser rather than by hand, because the metal is too hard for a traditional graver. The result is crisp and permanent, but it has to be done before the ring ships rather than added afterwards.

Tungsten is the most limited. It is harder than the tools normally used, so engraving is laser only and depth is shallow. Keep the wording short.

Whatever the metal, keep it to a date, two names or a short line. The inside of a band is not much space, and a long message engraved small becomes unreadable after a few years of wear. And settle your size before you engrave, because an engraved ring cannot be exchanged.
